Our goal is to provide more than just basic academic education - we want to give our kids a well rounded and holistic education that provides for greater opportunities in the future.
All of our children go to private, non-government schools where they learn English and we can ensure they get the best education to prepare them for adulthood. Unfortunately government schools are overcrowded, underfunded and understaffed so paying for school is the best way to ensure the children will get a quality education with a wide range of subjects and opportunities. They speak both English and Swahili at home.
We support also our Ujamaa Family when they complete their Secondary Education through our Forward Together program, so that ultimately they will be able to gain employment and take care of themselves. So far we have supported one student in a hospitality course and she went on to get a job at a hotel. She has since been married and has children of her own. Our current eldest is a qualified Clinical Officer who has completed her 7 month residency internship in a hospital in Arusha. She remains part of our Forward Together program while she finds her feet in the world. Soon she will be able to fully support herself to live on her own, but she is always part of our Ujamaa Family and can often be found helping at home during her time off.

General Sponsorship - $50 per month
General Sponsorships are designed to support the on-going running costs of the home. This is used to pay for food, clothing, healthcare, home costs and extra activities. As a General Sponsor you will receive a Sponsorship Pack and then a letter from your child twice a year.
Education Sponsorship - $60 per month
Education Sponsorships are used to pay for school fees, transport, uniform, text books and stationery. As an Education Sponsor you will receive a Sponsorship Pack, a copy of the child's school results at the end of each term as well as a letter from the child twice a year.

Why do we pay for school instead of sending kids to a Government School for 'free'?
The official languages of Tanzania are English and Swahili. However, in government schools, Primary education is taught in Swahili and Secondary education is taught in English. This transition is very difficult for most students and the fail rate is extraordinarily high. Additionally Government schools are over-crowded, under-staffed and lacking funds. They provide a basic education and often in a very harsh emotional environment.
There are National Exams in Year 4, Year 7, Form 2 & Form 4 - if you fail these exams you are not allowed to return to education in a Government school.
Since our children learn English throughout Primary school by attending an English Medium School, their transition into Secondary is a lot easier and they also have a much better chance of gaining employment when they leave school. "I met Carley on a volunteer trip to Mombasa, Kenya in 2006. It was her first time participating in something of this sort and I remember her being in tears the first night, overwhelmed by the experience. I had to return home after two weeks, Carley stayed for another month. We lost contact and reunited several years later on social media. At that point, Carley had founded Ujamaa Children's Home and I was excited to have someone with feet on the ground that I could partner with, in my own small way. My husband and I have made it a priority to seek opportunities for our family to serve and have been honoured to sponsor Meshack and Shedrack at Ujamaa. When Carley sent an email looking for a sponsor three years ago for these 5 year old twins, I saw my son, also 5 and from Ethiopia.
